Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop #1: Is There Another Way for Me to Respond to My Students' Writing?: Exploring Modes and Approaches for Feedback
Monday, February 5, 2024 12pm to 1pm
About this Event
2100 Eure Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106
Offering students constructive feedback on their course papers is one of the most important ways to support student learning and writing development. Yet offering feedback can be incredibly labor intensive–especially if we want to take into account students’ individual experiences and levels of preparedness for academic writing.
In this workshop, we draw on the vast research literature in Writing Studies on best practices for responding to students’ writing, while also taking into account the labor involved. Specifically, we demonstrate a range of modes and approaches for responding to student writing beyond written comments alone. These include audio/video comments, workshops/conferences, and peer review. Research shows that these alternative modes can be just as helpful as written feedback (if not more so) for encouraging students’ revision and reflection on their writing.
Participants will leave with concrete strategies for implementing these approaches that will save time and even encourage greater student engagement with feedback.
Lunch provided to first 25 registrants.
