Journalist and anthropologist Brian Goldstone (Ph.D., Duke University) will discuss his recent book, There is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America, which was selected as a "Top Ten Book of the Year" by both the New York Times and the Atlantic in 2025. In this gripping and deeply reported book, Goldstone plunges readers into the lives of five Atlanta families struggling to remain housed in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city. This event will include and on-stage interview and Q&A from the audience. A limited number of copies of There is No Place for Us will be available.

This is the inaugural event of the Department of Anthropology lecture series "How to Be Human," supported by the College of Arts and Sciences. Goldstone's visit is sponsored by Anthropology, Journalism, American Ethnic Studies, the Program for Leadership and Character, and the Humanities Institute via a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
