This course is designed to explore how the church family parallels a blended family--a concept developed from research on church mergers. The impact of each church’s experiences as separate congregations greatly affected their ability to develop an identity representative of the two together. The same can also be found with the church family in general: a church family is, in essence, a blended family. Diverse experiences, personal preferences, and family histories come together to create a church family and inform the actions of people in the life of the church. We will examine tools rooted in Pastoral Care, as well as the influence of Family Systems Theory and Loss of Assumptive World, which will help pastors and ministry leaders lead their congregations to discovering their collective identity.
