Russia’s War Against Ukraine: A Continuing Refugee Crisis

To commemorate the first anniversary of Russia’s war against Ukraine, WFU’s Jewish Studies Program will host a talk by Polish Jewish sociologist Jagna Kofta.

“Russia’s War Against Ukraine: A Continuing Refugee Crisis” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. via zoom. In this talk, Kofta will speak of the ongoing refugee crisis in Ukraine and share stories of refugees’ challenges and resilience during the protracted conflict. To join the talk, please visit https://tinyurl.com/6z9rde95.

When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Kofta and her partner anthropologist Józef Markiewicz, started an impromptu aid organization, Help Us to Help Others (HUTHO), to assist refugees seeking to escape Ukraine into Poland. Wake Forest students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as local community members, donated many thousands of dollars in support of Kofta’s work. Since the beginning of the war, HUTHO has helped resettle dozens of Ukrainian refugee families and provided support to those in need of medical care and employment.

This event is hosted by Wake Forest University’s Jewish Studies Program with support from the Departments of History and German & Russian Studies, as well as the Wake Forest Chapter of Every Campus a Refuge (ECAR).
