Private Life: Domestic and Interior Spaces in 20th Century Art

The division between interior and exterior spaces often draws a distinction between private and public lives. Drawn from Reynolda’s and Wake Forest University’s art collections, the exhibition explores how interiors reflect the inner self of both
subjects and artist. Depictions of these spaces throughout the twentieth century chronicle reactions to war, personal tragedy, and social change. In this exhibition, diverse works by artists from John Sloan to Alice Neel demonstrate the complex narratives interior spaces can tell. Private Life was curated by Julianne Miao, Curatorial Fellow. Miao’s yearlong fellowship was made possible by the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative, jointly funded by the Walton Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
