Deshira Wallace (MSPH) will offer a talk on health services needs for Latinos at risk of diabetes, and Dominicans living with diabetes, a disease that affects Latinos at an extremely high rate. Ms. Wallace is a soon-to-be graduate from the Department of Health Behavior in UNC’s Gilling School of Global Public Health and recently defended her dissertation on assessing the effects of stress on diabetes-related behaviors in a heterogeneous Latino population. She has conducted research in the Dominican Republic aimed at exploring how individuals in rural areas self-manage their type 2 diabetes. She has also researched the mental health burden of living with type 2 diabetes through qualitative inquiry. Ms. Wallace received her B.A. in Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University. Outside of UNC she is on the board of directors of two local non-profits focused on youth development.
