https://thelink.wfu.edu/event/12381552After sharing excerpts from his series of compositions for small gongs, known collectively as Anomali, I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot) will discuss the motives behind his work with Insitu Recordings and respond to questions about his creative process. Bridging carefully considered limitations with unconventional instrumentation and new playing techniques, and inspired by minimax methods associated with the award-winning composer Slamet Abdul Sjukur, Anomali is as groundbreaking as it is informed by recent trends in music composition in Indonesia. The series is also exemplary of his unique approach to creativity and collaboration, which has influenced his peers and shaped Insitu Recordings’ mission.
I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot) is a performer and composer working in the medium of gamelan music. He holds a degree in Performing Arts from the Indonesian Institute for the Arts (2009) and a master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia (2021). His compositions are celebrated for their originality and emphasis on creative process over artistic product. In his capacity as Artistic Director of Insitu Recordings, he advances appreciation of Indonesian performing arts across the world by developing projects that transcend cultures and geographies.
