Gamelan Open Rehearsal: Music of the Walking Warriors

Come to the Hanes Gallery to watch an open rehearsal for WFU Gamelan.

Visitors can experience the sounds and learn traditional principles of Balinese gamelan through one of the strongest and most celebrated aspects of Balinese artistic culture: new composition.

Performers will be working on gamelan baleganjur, a performance traditionally used for accompanying warriors into battle, ceremonial processions (including cremations), and into modern Bali via competitions. It's traditionally male-coded music. The sound is perceived as "comforting noise," capable of both scaring away chaotic spirits and comforting human audiences.
