Summary writing is difficult: it requires adept reading comprehension, synthesis, organization, and paraphrase. Teaching summary writing can be just as daunting: How do you explain what’s “important” from a piece of writing–or better yet, how can you help student writers identify key information for their summaries (without cherry picking)? How do you build their confidence in using metacommentary and citation to avoid plagiarism? And how can we make summarizing a meaningful and–dare I say–fun exercise for student writers?
