Learning students’ names is a primary way we connect with them and begin to build community in our classes; yet many of us struggle with the pronunciation of international students’ names. This workshop is designed to help you begin to understand the nuances of Chinese name pronunciation so that you feel more prepared on the first day of class to connect with this subset of students. Dr. Yu will provide a broad overview of the cultural differences of naming in US and China, a contrastive perspective at the English and Chinese pronunciations, and share tactics to start conversations with Chinese international students. Please bring your laptop to get access to the course roster and NameCoach on Canvas.
Dr. Yu will also provide drop-in Zoom office hours from 3:00-4:30pm on August 26 (F) as a follow up to the workshop for those desiring additional support.
Due to the medical needs of some individuals participating, please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, scented lotion, or any other scented products to this event.
