Living to Grow Up:

How Childhood Death Became “Unnatural”

Professor of Journalism and Pediatrics at New York University and Co-Director of NYU Florence, Dr. Perri Klass is a pediatrician and a prolific author of nonfiction and fiction about the practice of medicine and the people affected by illness and health care. She has written numerous essays and books encompassing medical journalism and creative nonfiction. Her most recent book, The Best Medicine, provides an historical perspective on the role of public health in reducing child mortality.
Much of Dr. Klass’s work addresses perennial questions about physicians, child patients, and the role that medicine, health, and illness play in human relationships and in all our lives. For that reason alone, her writing can be characterized as addressing bioethics – a bioethics that is both broadly accessible and wide in scope.
