- Right to Repaire with Geek in Heels with Shalisha Morgan (Owner & Founder of Geek In Heels and iSee Tech for Kids): The right to repair electronics refers to government legislation that is intended to allow consumers the ability to repair and modify their own consumer electronic devices, where otherwise the manufacturer of such devices require the consumer to use only their offered services or void the product's warranty. What if, instead, you were educated on your Right to Repair your own device? In this talk Shalisha Morgan, Owner and Founder of Geek In Heels and an iFixIt influencer, will share her repair knowledge and demonstrate just how easy it can be to fix your own device issues.

- Deliberately Disorienting Design: Using the Scientifically Sound Principles of Experimental Psychology to Create a Confusing Musical Instrument with Elliot Inman (Founder, MusicalCircuits.com). As we strive to optimize every aspect of our lives, we surrender ourselves to artificial intelligence and machines that listen and learn every intimate detail about us to make their own decisions for us. What if, instead, we built a musical instrument so clumsy that it forces us to abandon our quest for perfection and rely only on inspiration and ingenuity? In this talk, we will discuss how to use the science of the human mind to create musical instruments that have the power to confuse and delight us.

- Googling Dynamic Functional Brain Networks with Dr. Paul Laurienti (Director and Co-Founder, Laboratory for Complex Brain Networks): Paul completed his MD and PhD training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1999. He completed a research fellowship at Wake Forest School of Medicine and became an assistant professor in the Department of Radiology in 2002. He has since achieved the level of tenured full professor. He is the Director of the Laboratory for Complex Brain Networks and leads an interdisciplinary group of scientists.

More information about "A Pint of Science":

From tattoos to fossils to weather forecasting, Wake Forest University and Wake Downtown are partnering with community organizations and businesses to demystify science with talks at Winston-Salem breweries by local researchers. The talks are part of the international Pint of Science festival.

Pint of Science, an annual event that takes place every May, brings researchers to local pubs and breweries to show the latest happenings in the world of science. The festival began in London in 2013 and has since spread to nearly 300 cities in dozens of countries around the world, providing an informal platform for dialogue between the STEM community and curious members of the public, with no prior subject knowledge required.  This is the first year that Pint of Science will take place in Winston-Salem.

Local Pint of Science events following three themes will take place at 6:30 p.m. in three Winston-Salem breweries May 20-22.

The event marks the launch of a new initiative called The Science of Winston Salem (TSO WS), using the arts, popular culture and Winston-Salem's unique history to enhance the scientific literacy of the community. Partners in the consortium include Wake Forest Innovation Quarter, Kaleideum, Wake Forest School of Medicine (CTSI Program in Community Engagement), The Olio, New Winston Museum and two high school science teachers – Matt Brady and Shari Brady -  who founded an organization called "The Science of".
