Guest Lecture Recital: Music and Politics

Ulrike Anton, flute

The lecture recital “Music and Politics” by Austrian flutist Ulrike Anton and American pianist Russell Ryan (ASU) focuses on composers that were persecuted, exiled or killed by the Nazi-Regime during World War II. Their program covers a wide range of composers that need to be mentioned when trying to give an insight into the complex situation of this time period.

The aim of this lecture is to bring forgotten repertoire back onto the stage and make audiences aware of the substantial quality of these works. It should also show the relevance of these composers within the historical context of the music of the 20th century.

Featured Composers:  Erwin Schulhoff, Ruth Schönthal, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Béla Bartók. Bartók, Francis Poulenc, and Mieczyslaw Weinberg
