In this talk, Dr. Hannah Weiss Muller discusses the relevance, resilience, and significance of the traditional bond between subject and sovereign in the roughly thirty-year period after 1763. She explores why subject status was used and leveraged in the British Empire and argues that the central relationship between monarch and subject proved instrumental to governing an expanding empire during a period more typically known as the Age of Revolution.
Dr. Hannah Weiss Muller is Assistant Professor of History at Brandeis University, and a historian of Britain and the British Empire with particular interests in the long eighteenth century and the intersections of law, monarchy, identity, and subjecthood. Her book, Subjects and Sovereigns: Bonds of Belonging in the Eighteenth –Century British Empire, is under contract with Oxford University Press. It argues that subject status served as an organizing and contested principle of the eighteenth century, and that the bond between monarch and subjects was integral to the coherence of the British Empire.
