THIS IS A PAST EVENT.
In this session Erin Henslee will introduce a course, Computer Tools for Problem Solving and Critical Thinking. This course will introduce students to scientific computing through the use of MATLAB. The learning outcomes of the course are centered on the ability to use technology and critical thinking to independently solve problems, whilst learning MATLAB programming a secondary objective. This course is an adaptation of a level 2 (sophomore) Numerical Methods course for engineering students Erin coordinated at The University of Surrey, removing the numerical methods math, and focusing on using MATLAB to perform tasks/answer questions. The course implements a flipped classroom approach, where students follow weekly guided written and video lessons on topics such as “plotting”, and completing comprehension quizzes through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment. A demo site, to demonstrate how content would be introduced, has been created for the course and can be found at: computers4problemsolving.wordpress.com/. The taster session will be a portion of one of the in-person lab sessions the students would attend following the Week 7 self-study. In this session, “For Loops” are introduced through a dice rolling game. Through completion of the lesson, students will know the five components necessary for programming a For Loop: a counter, a starting value for the counter, a step size for the counter, a finishing value for the counter and instructions to follow each iteration of the value of the counter. Upon completion of the independent study and this lesson, students should be able to complete the week’s lab assignment: simulating the basics of the game in MATLAB including challenges to implement two users, simulated dice rolling, and determining the game winner.
